Data Conversion for Financials

S.No 5
Job Code DCF
Job Title Data Conversion for Financials
Job Description
Key Responsibilities and Tasks
The data conversion process is complex and involves multiple stages. Your primary tasks would include:
  1. Strategy & Planning:
    • Defining the overall data conversion strategy, including the scope (what data to convert, like open invoices, GL balances, or full transaction history) and the cutover timeline.
    • Determining the sequence in which to load data for various Financials modules (e.g., General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Fixed Assets).
  2. Extraction and Transformation (ETL):
    • Extracting financial data (e.g., General Ledger balances, vendor/customer master data, open transactions) from the legacy system using SQL or other extraction tools.
    • Data Cleansing: Identifying and fixing errors, inconsistencies, or duplicates in the extracted data.
    • Data Mapping: Creating detailed documents that map every field in the old system to the corresponding field in the Oracle Financials data model.
    • Transformation: Applying logic to the data to make it compatible with Oracle's structure and standards. This is often done using tools like PL/SQL, ETL tools (like ODI), or spreadsheet templates.
  3. Loading and Validation:
    • Loading Data: Using Oracle-provided tools and interfaces to upload the transformed data into the new system.
      • For Oracle Cloud: Common tools include FBDI (File-Based Data Import) spreadsheets and ADFdi (ADF Desktop Integrator).
      • For Oracle EBS: Tools often involve APIs, SQL*Loader, and Interface Tables.
    • Data Reconciliation: Running reports in both the legacy and the new Oracle system to ensure that the converted balances match exactly. This is a crucial step for finance.
    • Troubleshooting: Identifying and resolving any errors encountered during the load process, which often involves fixing issues in the source data or transformation logic and then reloading.
  4. Testing and Go-Live:
    • Mock Conversions: Executing multiple practice runs ("mock loads") to perfect the process before the final cutover.
    • Support: Providing technical support during User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and the final production cutover.

Essential Skills for the Role
A successful Oracle Financials Data Conversion specialist needs a mix of technical and functional knowledge:
Technical Skills
  • Database & Querying: Strong proficiency in SQL and PL/SQL for data extraction, manipulation, and validation.
  • Oracle Tools: Expertise with Oracle's data loading tools: FBDI/ADFdi (Cloud) or APIs/Interface Tables (EBS).
  • ETL Knowledge: Familiarity with Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) concepts and potentially tools like Oracle Data Integrator (ODI).
  • Reporting: Knowledge of reporting tools like OTBI (Oracle Transactional Business Intelligence) or BI Publisher for generating validation and reconciliation reports.
Functional Skills
  • Oracle Financials: A solid functional understanding of core Oracle Financials modules (like General Ledger (GL), Accounts Payable (AP), Accounts Receivable (AR), and Fixed Assets (FA)) to understand how the data should behave in the new system.
  • Data Structure: Deep knowledge of the Oracle Financials data model (tables and fields) to accurately perform data mapping.
Soft Skills
  • Attention to Detail: Absolute precision is required, as even small data errors can cause major financial issues.
  • Analytical and Problem-Solving: The ability to analyze complex data discrepancies and trace issues back to their source.
  • Communication: Excellent communication skills to coordinate with functional consultants, business Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), and the technical development team.
